Wireless Justice: Stopping Criminals From Making Deadly Phone Calls

There is not a more dangerous group to have cell phones in their hands than those who have already been convicted of a crime. This is probably a pretty obvious statement to most people, but most of us do not spend a lot of our days thinking about this fact. Fortunately, there are people out there who are doing that work for us. Today, we spotlight their efforts in the hopes of better understanding why their work is so critical.

Imagine that you are a correctional officer working in a prison in South Carolina. This was the reality for Robert Johnson for a number of years. He liked the work that he did, and by all accounts he was good at his job. One of the things required of him was to make sure that inmates could not get their hands on cell phones. These are contraband material in the prisons, and that means that it is entirely necessary to stripe them away from those inside prison walls.

Robert Johnson did take away a number of cell phones as well as other contraband material that made its way into the prison. One of the things that he took away was a package that arrived at the prison. The gangs within the prison believed that the package had a value of around $50,000 to them. This was enough to put him on a list of people that they wanted to do harm to. Unfortunately for Johnson, the gang decided that they actually would carry out an attack on him.

The hit was ordered, and Johnson had to deal with it while simply trying to get along with his day at home. He was just trying to sleep and mind his own business when an intruder came in and shot him multiple times. The shots were very painful, but he was able to survive the ordeal. The fact that he pulled through was great news and also led to this story being told.

These days, Securus continues to work with states and their prisons to make sure they have the latest technologies available to them to prevent cell phones from being used behind prison walls. They want to ensure that no illegal phone calls are made. If those calls do leak through, they want to identify where they came from so that the cell phones may be stripped away from them.

Some are still hesitant to put into place new laws or new technologies to try to work on this problem. However, with stories like that of Robert Johnson out there, it is only a matter of time before more places start to come to their senses. They obviously have to do something about this problem, and the best answer for that is to implement these new technologies.
